Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

CERT is a national program that educates volunteers about disaster preparedness. Our training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or businesses in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their neighborhood. 

CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.

HAM Radio Operators

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

We offer free Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) training to help neighbors prepare for disasters. The training identifies:

• How to secure your home and protect your neighborhood immediately following a disaster.
• Neighbors who have emergency response skills and equipment.
• Shut-off sites for natural gas, propane tanks and water service.
• Neighbors who may require special assistance, like children and the elderly.
• A neighborhood gathering site and care center.

We’ll bring the training to you! We have trained volunteers who will come to your neighborhood, provide training and help you establish an emergency action plan. First responders may not be able to reach everyone impacted within hours or even days after a disaster. This is especially the case in the event of a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami. Being 2 Weeks Ready means having a plan and enough supplies for you and your household to survive on your own for a full two weeks should a disaster occur.

Be Two Weeks Ready

• Takes pressure off first responders so they can triage effectively and attend to life-threatening situations
• Ensures you and your family can survive if roads are impassable, and no one can reach you with help or supplies
• Encourages neighbors to care for one another, along with other vulnerable populations

Be Informed

• Sign up for emergency alerts in your area at OR-Alert.
• Make sure your cell phone has Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled.
• Know evacuation routes in your area.

Make a Plan

• Learn how to develop an Emergency Plan.
• Discuss the plan with your household, loved ones, friends and neighbors.
• Practice the elements of the plan so you’ll be ready when a disaster occurs.

Build an Emergency Kit

• Assemble an emergency supply kit at Ready.gov or American Red Cross.
• Prepare a pet evacuation kit.
• Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry backpack, bucket or bag that you can use at home or take with you in an emergency.
• Everyone’s kit will look different. There is no one correct way to put together two weeks’ worth of supplies since everyone has individual needs.
